Fattoria La Vialla produces fine Chianti D.O.C.G. wines and a selection of other typical red wines with D.O.C. and I.G.T. appellations in the Tuscan hills around Castiglion Fibocchi, in the province of Arezzo, between 300 and 470 metres above sea level. The organic and biodynamic methods used to cultivate the land, the loose shale soil, the low yield per vine (on average 4,000-6,500 kg per hectare) and the presence of more than 30 grape varieties, give fruits that are rich in anthocyanins, polyphenols and unmistakable aromas, thanks to which the red wines made with Sangiovese grapes show complexity and longevity.
A brief overview of the red wines: some are younger and evoke the aroma of the winery at harvest time, dry even though they’re structured and soft, for example Vino Novo and Sangiovese 100%; others are dry, structured and full bodied wines, with a blend aged in wood and/or the bottle, such as the Chianti Superiore D.O.C.G. and Torbolone; then there are La Vialla’s great Tuscan wines, aged at length, such as the Chianti Riserva D.O.C.G., and the “super Tuscans” with Typical Geographical Indication (I.G.T.) appellation, Casalduro and Podere “La Casotta” (with low natural residual sugars), as well as “table wines” like the Barriccato. They are vinified in steel or concrete, some are aged in large Slavonian oak casks and others in 225 litre barriques. A few hundred bottles of the best vintages are kept in the “barriccaia” (= barrique cellar), to be drunk several years later after lengthy bottle ageing. These wines belong to La Vialla’s “Rarities”.
Besides the red wines strictly classified as “sweet” or “dry”, there are some that are not completely dry, for example il Birborosso and Casal Duro; then there are the unfiltered wines, such as the Barriccato, which are special because their wholeness conveys a sensation of extraordinary harmony between freshness, softness and sapidity, even though they have an extremely low residual sugar content, with the exception of Podere La Casotta.
For every occasion and for every taste Fattoria La Vialla has a red wine that is appropriate, be it dry, sweet, to drink with a meal or a “meditation wine”. The Fattoria’s organic red wines have received countless awards in international competitions, competing with many other top quality Italian wines and winning silver, gold and grand gold medals as well as being named “Best of Show”. For example at the Mundus Vini Summer Tasting 2022, the Cortona Syrah Riserva 2018 was named Best of Show Toscana Red.
Production characteristics of the various types of red wines summed up: the wines are produced using guaranteed organic and biodynamic methods, in a closed cycle, with natural yeasts, light filtering or no filtering, low sulphite content (50/70 mg/l) and ageing in selected wood.
