Chianti has always been the most typical and famous Tuscan wine, and Sangiovese grapes - in this Chianti from La Vialla 90% of the blend - are the variety that best represents the terroir and the vintage’s characteristics. In 2020 they were picked during a period of alternating sunshine and rain. The summer - hot and full of sun - had made the skins thin and ripe, favouring the extraction of polyphenols (tannins and fragrance) and anthocyanins (colour), which led to full-bodied wines rich in colour and aromas. After 5 months of ageing in large casks, the blend was completed with Merlot and Canaiolo; their contribution may be small (10%), but it enriches the cuvée with aromas and, at the same time, softens the Sangiovese‘s pungent tannins.
Tasting - Colour: medium-intensity ruby red with a garnet coloured "rim“ - around the edge of the glass - which becomes more pronounced during ageing. The nose: sweet spices, violet and a finale of small red fruits, of forest floor and balsamic notes that increase as it ages in the bottle. In the mouth: pleasantly dry and slightly astringent (the tannins!), it mellows in the bottle as time passes, acquiring a surprising silkiness and persistence.
